Hiking to Mt. Muhavura

Mountain Muhavura can be Seen from all over Kisoro,  it’s volcano is capped by a small but pretty crater lakes which acts  as a guide.  Its cone-shaped mountain improves the chances of clear view. Much of the climb passes a rocky surface covered by grasses and small shrubs, Hikers are rewarded with the view of the other Virunga volcanoes once at the top. The hike takes 8 hours round trip covering 12km.     This is a 1 day hiking or trekking.   This can be combined with gorilla trekking tour. Its better to start with Gorilla trekking safari and then next day can embark Volcano  mountain hiking.  Arrange this  with us at the time of booking for proper flowing of your itinerary.

Muhavura is part of Mgahing National park situated  in kisoro district, southwestern Uganda, this park was gazetted in 1991 and is part of the Virunga conservation area.  It adjoins Rwanda’s volcano and the DRC virunga National parks. Mgahinga gorilla National park experiences two wet rainy seasons; February-May and September – December of each year. The maximum amount of rainfall in a year is 250mm (October) and minimum is 10mm (July)

Day 1 – Travel to  Mgahinga/Kisoro .

Your Guide will pick you from your hotel in the morning after  your breakfast, drive to kisoro town to get ready for your next day’s volcano mountain climbing. The journey will be taking Masaka Kabale Kisoro Road .Will be  stopping on   Uganda’s  highlights like equator crossing  with a stop over for some photograph taking, Masaka town and later to Mbarara town for lunch and continue through Kigezi highlands with fascinating scenery , proceed to  Kabale town and 2 hrs again to Kisoro. Check into  hotel in Kisoro Tourist Hotel  for the overnight.

Day 2 –   Muhavura Volcano Climbing.

Climbing and hiking Muhavura mountain in south western Uganda is an adventurous and a worthwhile visit walking through the beautiful terrains which are varied and often like a desert. the open slopes are covered with thick shrubs and thickets which are broad and twisted plants which look like Yucca. The trails that you walk through as you get to see all the 3-peaks normally turn foggy in the mountains.

The walk is through muddy and slippery grounds as it rains on and off. And as you get to the summit, you find small crater ponds but on the summit which are pristine and completely hiding in a slight hollow like shape. Accommodation again at the Kisoro Tourist Hotel .

Day 3 – Travel day back to Kampala.

Morning after your breakfast, embark on your return journey back to Kampala with lunch at Ingongo cultural village at Mbarara town.
