Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest
Kibale Forest is the best place in Uganda to track chimpanzees. Guided walks start in the morning and afternoon, with groups led by rangers who follow chimpanzee calls and movements.
Once you find them, you observe how they move through the forest, feed, and interact. Unlike gorillas, chimpanzees are more active and move quickly, which makes the experience different.
Apart from chimpanzees, Kibale is home to many other primates such as red colobus, black and white colobus, and grey cheeked mangabeys. Birdwatchers also find a wide range of species here.
To prepare, wear light long-sleeved clothing to protect against insects and carry good walking shoes. A rain jacket is also useful since the forest is wet most of the year.
Many travelers combine chimpanzee tracking with a visit to Bigodi Swamp, a nearby community-managed wetland. It offers a chance to see more primates, birds, and learn about local conservation efforts.
